Site of the First Naval Battle of the American Revolution and a National Historic Site — Built 1770

In June 1775, faced with supplying lumber to British troops or risking hunger and retaliation, Machias settlers defiantly captured a British Lieutenant and his ship, Margaretta, in a daring battle. Despite the Lieutenant's escape and subsequent death, the patriots secured victory, marking a pivotal moment dubbed the "Lexington of the Sea."

Burnham Tavern, witness to these events, stands as a National Historic Site, preserving not only the memory of the battle but also the lifestyle and architecture of the era.

Burnham Tavern is one of 21 homes in the United States designated as most significant to the American Revolution.
